Overview

The data used in this analysis comes from the European Social Survey (ESS) which provides a wide variety of measures on attitudes and beliefs of representative European population from over 30 countries. This face-to-face survey has been conducted every two years since 2001 providing a vital (and academically rigorous) resource to capture European social, political and moral fabric .

Our analysis here focuses on pooled data across all countries from 2002-2016 (latest year available at the time of this writing). For survey methodology, original questionnaire, and data downloads visit the ESS website .

ESS Question:  Taking all things together, how happy would you say you are? The core module of ESS (2002-2016) has asked this question from respondents on a scale (1=Extremely unhappy, 1=Extremely happy).
